Sorption carbon filters (FSU)

Sorption carbon filters (FSU) are designed for deep purification of a recycle condensate from highly dispersed oil and oil products, as well as for treatment of natural waters from organic pollutants, removal of taste and odour.

Filter description: Sorption carbon filters (FSU) are widely used as "scavengers" (absorbent of organic substances) in the primary demineralizers to prevent the biological incrustation of ion exchange resins in the ion-exchange filters. FSU filters are applied in the first or second stage in treatment of run-off coming from industrial site and waterworks, and in the final stage of waste water post-treatment prior to the waste discharge into fishery ponds; post-treatment of drinking water (to improve its organoleptic properties) and etc.

Bituminous and wood charcoal, coking coal and specific adsorbent (MIU-C, zeolite, alumina silicates) are used as a filtering material in the sorption carbon filters.

 

Design description: Industrial sorption carbon filters (FSU) consist of
  • vessel;
  • top and bottom distribution assemblies;
  • piping;
  • shut-off valves;
  • sampling station.

 

FSU filter has cylindrical vessel made of welded sheet steel and equipped with welded elliptical pressed bottoms. The lower bottom has three welded legs to mount the filter on a foundation.


Upper and lower bottoms have centrally welded flanges for external connection of piping and internal connection of distribution assemblies (bottom and up).

 
Operation principle: Filter cycle includes following stages:
  • sorption and adsorption (filtration) processes;
  • loosening and backwash;
  • discharge of the first filtrate (fine coal dust);
  • full or partial replacement of the ion exchange resin;
 

 

Pressurized incoming water is supplied to the filter, uniformly spreads by the top collection and distribution assembly and passes through the filtering bed downwards. All removed impurities are sorbed by the enlarged inner surface of the filtering material's particles, while the permeate water is removed through the lower drainage assembly into the collecting receiver. The incoming flow temperature is essential for high-quality purification of steam condensate from oil products (the temperature shall be at least 70°С, 90°С is optimal).


To prevent packing and remove organic films, a regular (1-2 times a week) loosening and backwash of the filter's bed shall be performed with a great care to avoid removal of filter bed's upper particles.

 

Since regeneration of the sorption activity (capacity) of the sorbent agent is a labour- and energy-intensive process, filtering materials of this group are used only once in the majority of process flow charts, with further replacement and disposal of the waste filtering materials according to the established procedure.


The operation cycle of FSU filter is over when one of the specified parameter of permeate quality is not achieved and/or inlet-outlet pressure differential is more than 0.3 Mpa.
